Birkby Junior School joins joins the Windrush Anniversary Garden
Children in Class 4M at Birkby Junior School planted broad beans and nasturtium seeds for the Windrush Anniversary Garden. Their teacher told us, “ The children have been looking after their plants and we’ve seen some fantastic growth this week! They wanted to send some pictures to you to update you on how they’re doing.” Here are some of the broad beans getting rather tall. The nasturtium seeds to longer to germinate.
Later their teacher, Ms Hannah Massett said “4M have really enjoyed growing their seeds and many of them visit the leisure centre regularly so have said they will go to visit the memorial garden when they do! In a few weeks’ time, the Y6s are going to come to our class and teach them about Windrush so they will understand further the meaning of the project.”
- Delivering soil, seeds and pots to Birkby Junior School in early May.
- Natalie helps to deliver seeds, compost and pots as part of the Adopt a Pot scheme for the Windrush Anniversary Garden.
- Spring Grove Junior Infant & Nursery School, Water Street, Springwood Huddersfield joined the Adopt a Pot scheme before the holidays so the children looked after their seeds at home.
- At Spring Grove Junior and Infant School, children in Years 5 and 6 were asked to pot 2 seeds each and grow them at home over the holidays in April then return them for planting as part of the Windrush Anniversary Garden. Patrick Clarkson sent a message to show how the sunflower seeds were flourishing. Here is a picture of some of the seedlings back in the school’s potting shed. The children were given seeds for maize (sweetcorn), runner beans and sunflowers. As part of the Adopt a Pot scheme , they were invited to keep a seedling to grow at home.
- During later May, seedling were replanted in the Windrush anniversary Garden by members of WHEAT, a group of African Caribbean allotment gardeners. Planting between the existing bedding plants helps to protect the young seedlings and keep the beds looking busy and attractive as the young plants settles and grow.
- Work in progress!
- Transplanting seedlings from the Adopt a Pot Scheme that involved schools in April and May 2023. Many thanks to all the children in Years 5 and 6 that helped to grow the seeds at Spring Grove Junior and Nursery School and also to children in Class 4M at Birkby Junior School. All children will be able to see the seedling flourish and grow as they visit the Leisure Centre or pass by on the way to and from school.
- Planting between existing vegetation helps to bring variety to the original flower beds
- Everything will need a good water.
- Using existing beds helps to transform the Windrush anniversary Garden gradually so that it remains an attractive place for everyone.
- Some seedlings have been replanted to the allotments at York Avenue so that they can flourish with a bit more space.
